A Translation Study of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in the Descriptive Paradigm

An Shuang

Abstract: The trend toward the cultural turn in the field of translation studies was gradually revealed in the 1970s, and descriptive paradigm was developed based on criticizing the traditional normative paradigm. Based on the descriptive paradigm, this paper analyzed the underlying reasons for the successful translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from three levels, including the historical background, the translator and the sponsor. The study found that the special cultural and political situation of the May Fourth period, the triple identity of Zhao Yuanren as a linguist, a musician and a translator with views on children, as well as the dissemination and distribution through the Commercial Press formed a powerful impetus to promote the successful translation of this work.
