Poetry Translation Evaluation System Based on the Dimensions of Poetry

Abstract: Chinese classical poetry, boasting artistic charms such as beauty of form, of sound, of rhyme, of meter, of spirit, of implication, of imagery, of artistic conception, of interest and taste, and of sublimation, is well-deserved to be called a resplendent artistic and cultural treasure of China and of the world at large. Nevertheless, in the context of "One Belt and One Road" and "Chinese Culture Going Out", how to reproduce in the target language the same charm and emotional impact and how to make Chinese classical poetry popular among foreign readers is an urgent issue in the world of translation, to which no consensus of evaluation has been reached so far though, quite perplexingly, many different even contradictory standards have been proposed. Based on the essence of poetry, this paper discusses the particularity and complexity of poetry translation, then attempts to construct a systematic evaluation system of poetry translation, and and finally make a preliminary validation.
