Title: A Study on English and Chinese "Dog" Idioms from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphors

Name(s): Sun Hao

Abstract: Traditional research has regarded metaphor as a rhetorical device, while contemporary research elevates it to a cognitive style. This study uses conceptual metaphor theory to analyze and compare the English and Chinese "dog" idioms, and mainly answers two questions: What are the conceptual metaphor types of "dog" idioms in English and Chinese? What are the reasons for the similarities and differences between them? The research finds that there are mainly two conceptual metaphors in English and Chinese "dog" idioms: structural metaphor and ontological metaphor, but orientational metaphor is rare. Simultaneously, there is the same cognition in both languages that describes "people" as "dog" directly, and the differences are attributed to the different culture in language.
