A Study on the Two English Versions of Hongloumeng from the Perspective of Foreignization and Domestication: A Case Study of Jinling Prophecies 归化与异化视角下《红楼梦》两英译本研究——以金陵判词为例 Yang Miao 杨淼 Abstract: China's excellent culture is spread around the world, and traditional literature contains many profound allusions. Among them, the dissemination of Hongloumeng is particularly outstanding. Various translations have emerged, each with its own merits. From the perspective of domestication and foreignization, this paper makes a comparative analysis of Yang Xianyi and Hawkes' English versions of Jinling prophecies through image translation, allusion translation, puns translation and anagrams translation. This paper discusses the application of domestication and foreignization strategies in literary translation. It is found that Hawkes and Yang Xianyi adopt different strategies of domestication and foreignization for the target language for their different translation purposes. Hawkes mostly adopts domestication translation strategy, while Yang Xianyi generally uses foreignization translation strategy.
