Research on the Development and Limitations of Feminist Consciousness in Prostitute Transformation from In the Back Alley

Yitong Shang

Abstract   The prostitute reform movement launched by new China in the 1950s was intended to eliminate the evil prostitute system, and countless prostitutes were transformed and rejuvenated. The se-venteen-year literature is not lack of works on the theme of prostitute transformation, among which In the Back Alley is the most typical. These works reflect the distinctive characteristics of the seventeen-year literature, show the different lives of prostitutes after liberation, and also show the awakening of female consciousness in the new era under the description of this special group. However, in a society dominated by male chauvinism, prostitutes, a special group, will still be restricted by various factors when they break through the barriers of identity and yearn for a new social life, which also limits the further development of their female consciousness. This paper aims to analyze In the Back Alley from the above aspects, and explore the breakthrough and limitation of female consciousness reflected by the group of prostitutes.
