On the Postmodern Ethical Narration Techniques in LaRose

Fei Wang

Abstract Postmodern ethical narration is the representation of postmodern ethical ideas in the literary field, claiming the deconstruction of writer's authority and text's narrative center. Postmodern ethical narration argues that the relationship between self and the other should be reconstructed by admitting the differences and respecting the other, announcing the invalidity of traditional narration which pursues oneness, grand narrative and meta discourse in the fast changing postmodern social context. Louise Erdrich, a contemporary native American writer, has transcended the boundary of traditional linear narrative techniques in her work LaRose by using the multi-linear and multi-view techniques to form a panorama of postmodern novel with multiple different yet consonant voices. In this novel, Erdrich adopted the postmodern ethical narrative techniques such as parallel structure, polyphonic narration and carnival narration, extending the spatial meanings and realistic references of the textual narration. Against the backdrop of the state of North Dakota, the novel discloses the ethical problems of justice and traumatic memory of the native Americans in the contemporary context, highlighting its attributes of the native writings.
