Abstract: The phenomenon of “Buddha-like+ X” has become popular on the internet since the end of 2017. Although the name of “Buddha” is applied, it clearly shows the characteristics of fashionable subcultures. In many studies, attention and discussion about its earliest gender background of "Buddha-like men" and the practice of "masculinity" in contemporary transitional society have been ignored. Therefore, this article first sorts out the evolutionary background of the youth fashion from "beautiful men"-"grass-fed men"-"Buddha-like men" since the new century; then discussed the deconstruction of traditional masculinity by "Buddha-like men" in terms of power desire, competitiveness, and sexual dominance. Finally, a brief review of the changes in contemporary "dominant masculinity" since the 40 years of reform and opening up, revealing that masculinities is a connection and a sign of multilateral forces of political economy and culture. The popularity and decline of the "Buddha-like" fashion is a reflection of the diversity and complexity of the masculinity practice in contemporary Chinese society.
