Abstract: John Steinbeck's thought has many similarities with the Chinese traditional ideas in Confucianism and Taoism, which reflects the interaction of eastern and Western ideas as well as the common place of human values. In the novel The Red Pony, Steinbeck recognizes the occurrence of accidents and propose the harmony with nature. He also understands life and death, gain and loss and changes in a dialectical way. Jody, the hero of the novel, in the process of yearning for experiencing his grandfather's westward progress, grows up with increasing male consciousness, which are in accordance with the Confucian understanding to man's sense of mission such as regulating the family, governing the country and leveling the world. Jody himself is also gradually maturing psychologically and socially in dealing with a series of setbacks and challenges in life. In addition, the attitude towards the elderly, both Steinbeck and Confucianism and Taoism try to interpret the life course and the value of life through the unity of individual ideal and reality.
