In the novel The Red Pony, Steinbeck recognizes the occurrence of accidents and propose the harmony with nature. He also understands life and death, gain and loss and changes in a dialectical way. Jody, the hero of the novel, in the process of yearning for experiencing his grandfather's westward progress, grows up with increasing male consciousness, which are in accordance with the Confucian understanding to man's sense of mission such as regulating the family, governing the country and leveling the world.
