A Study on the Legitimization of Political Leaders' Speech from the Perspective of Proximization Theory: A Case Study of Putin's 2022 National TV Speech 趋近化理论视角下政治领导人讲话合法化研究——以普京 2022 全国电视讲话为例 Zhang Jiatao, Xiao Zhiqing 张家韬 肖志清 Abstract: The study of political leaders' speech contributes to understanding policy directions, and plays an important role in the legitimization of policies or actions. From the perspective of proximization theory, this paper takes Russian President Putin's 2022 national TV speech before Russia's war against Ukraine as an example to explore his legitimization strategies, namely spatial, temporal and axiological proximization, and the national image to legitimize subsequent actions. This research finds that Putin uses more spatial and temporal proximization to emphasize Russia's legitimization by expanding the scope of central entities. He adopts present-to-future conceptual shift, emphasizing the possible extension of the threat into the future, as a way of replacing the legitimization of the Ukraine and NATO. In terms of axiological proximization strategy, Putin uses the negative attitude of opposite entities to demonstrate the positive image of Russia. Putin has helped to shape Russia into an image of a democratic but authoritarian, as well as peace-loving country that maintains world security and stability.
