Abstract: The Seventh Day was written by Yu Hua and published in 2013. The translation of The Seventh Day won the 2018 Bottari Lattes Grinzane Literary Award in Italy. Based on the adaptation theory, this paper attempts to explore the death narrative in the English translation of Allan H. Barr's The Seventh Day and the relationship between the translation methods and strategies employed by the translator and the reader's reception. Adaptation theory requires translators to make adjustments during the translation process while taking into account contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability, salience of adaptation processes to select appropriate translation methods and strategies to achieve the desired effect. At the same time, from the views of the target language readers and cultural output, the translation is analyzed to provide insights for the study of death narratives in other texts. From the perspective of adaptation theory, the paper finds that it successfully navigates the balance between faithfulness to the original text and meeting reader expectations. The translator effectively preserves the foregrounding features of the original text and adheres to the author's writing intentions. Additionally, the translator also considers the social context and reading habits of Western readers to accommodate the readers' reading expectations when dealing with information disparities between Chinese and Western cultures.
