A Comparative Analysis on Linguistic Complexity of the Sametopic Writings Between Chinese and Foreign College Students 中外大学生同题写作语言复杂度对比分析 Zhang Linqi 张临齐 Abstract: This study intends to compare the same-topic writings of Chinese college EFL learners and native English speaking college students in order to find out the differences and similarities in linguistic complexity. The writing data comes from The International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English(ICNALE), including 100 essays selected from Chinese college EFL learners and native English speaking college students. The Lexical Complexity Analyzer (LCA) and Second Language Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA) developed by Professor Xiaofei Lu are used as research tools to analyze the complexity of the writings. The findings are as follows: In vocabulary complexity, Chinese college EFL learners are generally higher than native English speaking college students in terms of vocabulary density and vocabulary sophistication, but universally lower than native English speaking college students in terms of vocabulary variation.
