A Comparative Analysis on Linguistic Complexity of the Sametopic Writings Between Chinese and Foreign College Students

Abstract: This study intends to compare the same-topic writings of Chinese college EFL learners and native English speaking college students in order to find out the differences and similarities in linguistic complexity. The writing data comes from The International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English(ICNALE), including 100 essays selected from Chinese college EFL learners and native English speaking college students. The Lexical Complexity Analyzer (LCA) and Second Language Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA) developed by Professor Xiaofei Lu are used as research tools to analyze the complexity of the writings. The findings are as follows: In vocabulary complexity, Chinese college EFL learners are generally higher than native English speaking college students in terms of vocabulary density and vocabulary sophistication, but universally lower than native English speaking college students in terms of vocabulary variation. In syntactic complexity, except for mean length of clause, there are significant differences between the two in all dimensions, and the various measurement indicators of Chinese college EFL learners are widely lower than those of native English speaking college students.


摘要:本研究旨在对比中国大学生英语学习者和英语本族语大学生的同题作文以找出其语言复杂度的异同。作文语料来自亚洲英语学习者国际语料库网络(The International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of EnglishICNALE,选取了中国大学生英语学习者和英语本族语大学生作文各 100 份。以陆小飞教授的词汇复杂度分析器LCA和句法复杂度分析器L2SCA为研究工具,分析了两者作文的复杂度。研究发现:词汇复杂度方面,中国大学生英语学习者在词汇密度和词汇复杂度维度普遍高于英语本族语大学生,但在词汇变化性上普遍低于英语本族语大学生。句法复杂度方面,除了平均子句长度,两者在各个维度普遍存在显著性差异,且中国大学生英语学习者的各个测量指标普遍低于英语本族语大学生。
